Surmachina
Surmachina is a beatmaker's project from the north of Moscow, absorbing the ideas of classic hip-hop, noir jazz, and lo-fi aesthetics. In each of his releases, he experiments with a new sound. For example, the album Японские Заметки" (Japanese Notes), is recorded in the format of travel notes: with warm guitars, dictaphone recordings and jazz melodies. And the album ‘Strange rhythms of evening Moscow suburbs’ is united by reflection on the theme of megapolis and its suburbs. Sometimes, in Surmachina tracks you can hear hoarse saxophone and female vocals. The release “Онега” (Onega) mixes hip-hop beats, electronics and authentic instruments. In particular: recordings of Solovetsky choir, Bulgarian and Pomor chants, sampled Scandinavian talharpa and Carpathian kalyuka (flute). In 20204, the hip-hop album "И тайное общество битмейкеров" (And the Secret Society of Beatmakers) was released, dedicated to life in the big city. The main feature of the album is the use of modern synthesisers (Arturia Microfreak, Dreadbox Typhon) and samplers (Roland sp 404, Elektron Digitakt).
In 2025, a Journey Album is released, and along the way you'll encounter northern talharpa, Russian jaleikas and tunes, an Udmurt wedding song and a melody of Anatolian highlanders. It's called "Хождение за три моря" (Walking Over Three Seas) It's all thickly mixed with rocking hip-hop rhythms or synthesiser electronics.
